Very easy recipe for a hearty tasty thick winter chowder. Not that well known a dish in South Africa but you will not be disappointed. The kids went back for more!


  • 1 x 200g packet diced bacon
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped onion
  • 375 ml Water
  • 4 cups peeled and cubed potatoes
  • 1-2 teaspoons salt to taste
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste
  • 500ml Fresh Cream
  • 3 x tablespoons butter
  • 2 x cans baby clams


Place the bacon into a large pot and add a tablespoon of the butter and cook until almost crispy.

Add the onions and cook for 5 minutes. Add the water and potatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 15 to 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft.

Remove from the heat and let cool for a few minutes. Add the cream and remaining butter.

Drain the clams and add to the pot with half of the clam liquid. Found some Cape Point ones at our local Checkers

Cook for about 5 minutes or until heated fully. If the sauce is a bit thin to your licking just mash some of the potatoes in the pot until the desired thickness is achieved.

Service with some toasted ciabatta bread and enjoy.
